Which guage clusters fit which years?
« on: April 12, 2012, 10:14:56 am »
My truck is a 1980 model.  I want to replace the warning lights with a set of factory gauges.  I see the clusters for sale frequently on eBay and need to know how to identify which years' clusters will work in my truck.  Can anyone provide a set of guidelines to use to determine which clusters can be used in which model years?  I've read on this forum that the oil pressure gauge is mechanical up until year 1977, I think.  I've also read something about the volt vs. amp battery gauge and that you shouldn't use a volt gauge on a later model.  Can someone clear this one up for me, too?

If the variations are extensive, could we put together something for the technical thread?  I did a search for answers to these questions, but my searches turned up minimal info.  I suppose I'm not specifying the search criteria accurately enough.

Thanks.

They will all interchange with some modifications. Through the years there has been: diffrent font, diffrent needles, 85 or 100 mph, volts or amps, manuel or electric oil press., line colors (some were blue or orange lines i think). That's all i can think of right now, I'm sure there is more.

When i added a Tac cluster in mine. I had to trace the wiring on the printed circuit and change the wire pin locations on the connector.

They all fit all years. I'm using one off a 76 in my 87. Well, I kind of gutted the actual gauges themselves and used my 87 stuff but you can rearrange just as sarto said. Its the printed circuit you have to worry about, depending on what you want to do. A printed circuit for a lower optioned truck won't necessarily work if you're wanting to build a cluster with ALL the goodies that came in a higher optioned truck.

1978-up will bolt right in.  May need to repin the harness plug a little, but should be simple.
