1979 c20 reg cab sound help

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and these trucks my last vehicles were s10 blazers. I want to make my sound system sound better but don't want to cut p my dash (or rather my dad doesn't want me to b/c he wants to buy the truck later). My dad says to put 6x9s in the doors and leave the jensen factory style radio alone, which sucks. I have sony 6x9s, sony 4x6s, jvc 6.5s, kenwood 10s and a jvc reciever with aux input and usb which i used all the time in my s10 blazer, all except the 6.5s were installed in the blazer. the kenwood amp was damaged and I'll have to get a new one. I thought about kickpanels but they get in the way and are easy to kick out, this is a dd and is used as a truck so kicks are out, can anyone offer some guidance for a good sounding system that doesn't require cutting up the dash? I do not have a remote for the jvc radio anymore.

Why are Kicks out of the question?  There is NO way I would put speakers in a door.

Hey Cap,

What's the power/wattage of the shaft style stereo you're selling? Also, how many speaker outputs and how many pre-out RCA channels?

Sounds good.  6x9's in the door are the ONLY way to get decent bass without a sub... period.   

I have 6x9's in my doors.  made a bracket to mount two 3.5's in the center dash hole, and have two 6.5's in small boxes, upfiring, behind my seats.  Best sound stage I've had in one of these trucks.  I get complimented on my sub regularly, even though I don't have one...lol

Higher powered 6x9's are key.  I have 200W RMS 6x9s in my doors and an amp under my console that runs them.  They bump and get loud enough to give me a headache.

The 6x9's aren't pic'ed I can't find a pic of them.  all speakers are matched. 

Here's the AMP under my console.  A Sony SLimline 4 channel amp.
It powers the 6x9's in the doors and the 6.5s in the boxes behind the seats.

I have 2 6x9's in the doors, 2 6.5s behind the seats, and 2 3.5's in the center of the dash.  the amp powers the 6x9's and 6.5's and the head unit powers the 3.5s.
I get complimented on my sub all the time and I don't have one....   The way I hooked it all up is...
The dash speakers and behind the seat speakers are front/back  the 6x9's are hooked up on the sub channel, and i raise or lower power to them depending on how much bass i want, since they decide how much bass you get, period.  So i set my front/back with the 6x9;s off for best staging, then turn up the 6x9s to match how much bass i want.

Works quite well.  good staging, sounds as good as the optional high end stereos in new cars.   HAs great bass.  not like a good 12, but def can be like a single 10"

I understand about people not wanting you to cut your doors, but hey patch panels work great and dont detract from the value if you dont half-ass it.

Ok so a friend gave me a highliner from a truck like mine but its different...it is 2 pieces and only has 2 speakers which are junk and no radio moint...its old can anyone tell me anything about it?   Also i was thinking i can do something like drop some speakers in the doors...i saw it in a magazine awhile ago...

I got sick of the "phase III" speakers mounted on the ceiling by the rear window and gutted the boxes, now my sony 4x6 4 ways reside in the old boxes and they sound better but no low end still but it's better than it was. I'm probably putting the 6x9s in boxes in the corners, the 10s in truck boxes behind the seats, an amp under the console and the 6.5s in the doors. the 4x6s I'm not sure about but I like Chevrado's speaker in dash set up.

Ok, so I added the 6x9s in the cab corners and ran all new wiring for both pairs of speakers and the radio which I mounted on the ceiling using an underdash mount enclosure...turned out pretty decent...except my head unit has a few faceplate issues and restarts if I play with it too much...but it sounds so much better...I'll run the antennae extension up there when I decide I want fm radio or change the headunit. I rarely used fm or anything other than my flashdrives for music before so I'll go back to that

They never last since the glass drains in the door.  Nothing you can cover them with I have ever seen helps.  Plus it would need a lot of insulation to kill the tin can sound.  And most of the time they end up getting kicked in..
