What is this?
« on: May 12, 2012, 10:36:46 pm »
Ok, so while I was under my truck today, I found something by the oil filter that looks like it has a crack in it...kinda worried about it. Should I be freaking out?

I see the crack, but not clear what is cracked.  If that is the bell housing for the transmission(it looks to be the bell housing, just not sure from the pics) it has no oil in it(except in the torque converter if it is an auto).  If it is part of the actual transmission, I would be worried.

It's the torque converter shield. I'd be more worried about all those leaks

Thanks.

I'll wipe everything down underneath on Monday and take it for a spin to see if I can tell where it's leaking. It's always raining up here and I have a hard time telling with all the mud that splashes up underneath on our unpaved road.

driving it can cause the air to push the oil into other places. try to see where it is leaking from before you drive it

Thats doesn't look like its cracked, it is cracked! Easy enough to swap. Three bolts up each side, and the two that hold the braces on that run up behind the motor mounts.

He just has self changing fluids. Just add more when it needs it.
There are two tools needed, duct tape and WD40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD 40.

This is true. When I used to go mud bogging I would oil everything under my truck. A day or two later the mud would start falling off then I would spray it with water and it would be clean again. It made it real easy to clean.

I cleaned a lot of the oil off using brake cleaner and a rag. Hasen't shown any new leaks. Probably from the previous owner.
