So many quetions
« on: September 02, 2012, 09:28:34 am »
I know here lately I have been bombarding everyone with all sorts of questions. I am just trying to do my research before I start building my truck. Okay, I have an 84 K30 dually cab an chassis with a Dana60 up front and a corporate 14 bolt in back with 4.10 gears. I am looking at buying a 78 K30 dually. I am wanting a regular 8 foot bed. The 84 is about ten foot after the cab.

My questions is: Which rearend is the better of the two. If the 14 bolt is the better then will it fit in the 78. The 84 has the narrow rearend and the 78 has the wider rearend. Are the frames different between the two. I am torn between going flatbed or dually bed. I like the looks of both. Well until the next round of questions come through, thanks.

Better of the 2?  Which 2?  the front D60 and rear 14B?

Dana 70 Rear and a 14bolt FF. Sorry I guess I left out some of the important info there. I have had so many things running through my head that sometimes I seem to forget to put down on the computer or it gets all jumbled and is hard to make since of.

Just to clarify.
A cab and chassis is not a dually.

A dually has a Dana rear axle that is the same width as a 1/2 or 3/4 ton pickup rear axle, and comes with a pickup bed with fiberglass fenders similar to the ones on a step side.

A cab and chassis is just that. A truck from the factory without a rear bed, or body of anykind. Designed to have some sort of work body put on it by aftermarket. Such as a tool, or dump body, or flat bed. A cab and chassis has a 14 bolt while sharing internal parts such as gears, carrier, bearings etc., and brake parts with all 14 bolts has a narrower housing.

My cab and chassis K30 is a dually that had a welders bed on it from what I was told when I bought it. I bought it without a bed. I guess I just worded it wrong. Cab and chassis that has a dually rearend.

If you are wanting a regular bed, you are limited to the single wheel 14B, the cab and chassis dual rear wheel D70 will fit under it with some modifications.  There is a truck here with it.

Asking which is better is relative to what you want to build though.  If you have no need to carry 8500+ GVRW, the D70 is overkill.

Okay, I just re read everything.
I'm pretty sure your current truck 84 K30. Has bud wheels front and rear? Has a narrow rear axle housing? The frame is about 10' long behind the cab?
That would make it a cab, and chassis, not a dually.

The 78 K30 has a dually pickup bed on it? Has a Dana rear axle? Has bud wheels on it front and rear? It has a standard length frame? That would make it a dually, not a cab, and chassis.
You mention you want a regular 8' bed.
Then you mention this.
I am torn between going flatbed or dually bed.
If you use the 84 cab and chassis to build you only have one of those three options. A flat bed as the frame is to long for a pick up be it regular, or dually box.
If you use the 78 for a build then you can use a dually box with the rear end that's in it. Or you can put the narrow 14 bolt in and modify your wheel wells and run a standard 8' pickup box.

Okay Blazin, you are correct.lol I was calling the cab&chasssis a dually only because it has a dual wheeled rear axle. I guess all cab&chassis have the dual wheeled rear ends in them, right? Maybe not the proper term but that was how I was seeing it.

As far as the flatbed or dually bed, if I build the 78 frame which is a factory regular cab K30 dually then what I was torn with was either run the factory bed or put on a flat bed running the same rear end.  I understand I didn't state it correctly. We all learn something sometimes. No harm No foul. I hope you didn't take any of this the wrong way as it was not intended bad in anyway.

Okay everyone carry on :D

I vote for a regular fleetside bed on a cab and chassis at the right 131.5" wheel base.  Those dual wheels look great tucked under there without the big fenders sticking out.... My $.02

No worries, want to make sure we give out good advice based on whats what is all. Was a little confused at first is all.
You could get cab, and chassis 3/4, and single rear wheel 1 tons as well.
