Project I inherited. Updated new pics 1-14-13
« on: October 17, 2012, 07:25:41 am »
83 K20, 283, 700R4, 208.
A young man brought it to me to paint. Him, and a buddy of His's father thought they were body men! It was a horror show. I re did a couple spots, smoothed up the rest. Sold him a half decent used hood, because his was trashed.
He wanted to paint it black with a lower silver two tone. I pointed out that the rough body work, and black wouldn't go well together, that thing would have been waving at everyone when it went down the road! We decided silver with black SEM bed liner lower two tone.
Over all its not a horible truck, its going to show some rust in a couple years, but he isn't looking for a restoration job. I am pretty sure he will do some minor tail riding with it. His step father owns an excavation business, he works for him part time. Probably use it for work with him, cord wood,  etc. I have painted a bunch of trucks for his step father.

When it first showed up. I had removed the hood, and put a couple hours into bit of body work at this point.

Stripping the hood with a razor scraper. Two coats of pain, and two coats of primer.

Paint chips!

Pile of paint.

Getting ready for primer.

3 coats of high build urethane primer.

Still has a few sins, but it alot better than when he broughtit. The tail gate is pretty rough, but he said paint it. he will get another one down the road if he has to.

Another one saved by Blazin!

Looks good for as rough as you said it was when you got it.
I wish I had the funds to send mine down to you for the rest of the paint.

Still pretty wavy!!
One of the biggest problems is they didn't hand sand in any of the window openings or gas filler doors, or around the edges of anything.
Plus someone had done a repaint after what looks to be a new core support, and used hood, used RH fender that had been painted black over the original blue, then silver to match this truck, new LH fender, and cowl panel. They didnt sand in any of those spots either. So the paint, under the yellow primer was flaking off.
These guys had put body filler over paint, and primer. The RH door was rubbing against the fender so instead of adjusting the fender forward they dropped the door down on the hinges which wacked the body line out.
They replaced the front half of both rockers instead of just doing the whole thing. Instead of doing the cab corners when the cab was off the truck as it came off a K10 chassis. or while the bed was still off, they waited until they were both on and bolted down to do the cab corners. Welded the cab corner to rocker joint solid and covered it with filler.
Some hack butcherd in a set of floor pans, beat to fit welded in cockeyed!
At some point the back inside wall, floor, door jambs, and complete inside the doors had been brush painted with battle ship gray color, like a rustoluem paint.

Nice shop Harold... I only wish you were closer... I would pay you to finish my 85.  Running out of painting weather and don't have a shop with heat.  My body work is done now, sitting in 3 coats of 2K primer and a straight rust free body to do your magic on.  Best of all, GM 11 white...

I second the shop, but knowing myself if I had one that big it would be full of projects.

Still trying to get organized / set up. Finally cleaned the last corner of crap the previous tenant had piled up last week. Now its just a matter of time, and a hand here and there to move stuff around.

Been opening up totes, and boxes with stuff in them that I haven't touched in 5 to 20 years!
I told the Mac Tools guy its like Christmas. I've been buying tools the last 7 / 8 years and have hardly used them, a few have never been used!

Right now its got my buddies 79 K 30 project taking up half of it. I need to get back to work on that so I can get it gone, and start taking care of lose ends on my trucks.

Shop has oil heat, and a modified 55 gallon drum woodstove.

That's a great shop to be able to paint in... wish I had something like that too.

I've enjoyed the comments about the "harsh" body work... O'well, sometimes you have to remember that some people are ok with that...

I do have a question... I have the same tires on my pick -up (74 Chevy Stepside) and I noticed on one of the side walls a line some what like the pic in the lower most photo. Does anyone know what is going on there? is it a seam that is failing?

One of the belts is broken. You should get a new tire or it could blow.

So I'm finally getting around to posting the finished pics up of this truck.
Project update I hear through the grape vine that he has it back on the road as of a few days ago. I am waiting for some pictures with it all assembled, and I will put them up as well.
For now here are what I have through finish paint.

Masking off the two tone:

Silver sprayed:

Paint break:

Ready for him to assemble:

That looks great. I always liked these trucks in silver. He must be happy with a job like that considering what he brought in to be sprayed.

Did he even recognize it when he saw it without it waving to him anymore?

Well he texted me yesterday, said the motor is gone. He didn't go into detail. It didn't sound real strong when I was working on it!
