77 Chevy K10 350 i6 - Power Steering Fluid?
« on: January 28, 2013, 08:20:15 pm »
Sorry, I know I'm going to sound like an idiot but I've lost my mechanic and need to get my truck running again.  I ask you to bare with me.
I have a 1977 Chevy Scottsdale K10.  I believe it's a 350 (or such) i6 engine.  She has been sitting for about 3 months and I recently started her up to move her to another parking spot.  When I began driving, there was a terrible grinding noise that occurred everytime I turned the wheel.  I have seen fluid leaking off the rear axle but assumed it was oil somehow making it's way along the drive shaft as she has a tendency to leak oil.  Now, my hunch is I've a broken seal that is actually allowing the power steering fluid to leak and that it's not oil.  Does this sound like a feasible conclusion?
Also, for the life of me, I can't recall for sure where in the heck to add power steering fluid.  I'm attaching a photo of an engine I found online that is similar enough to mine.  I believe I am supposed to add the fluid in to the part surrounded by the red square in this photo (image source found at http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_images/3/1778/3941/29444470018_large.jpg).  Is this correct?
Thank you for your help.

That would be a V8, not an I6. Inline 6 is six cylinders in a row. A V8 is four clylinders on one side, and four on the other.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

That's what I thought but didn't want to put anything in until I verified.  Thanks flips87c30.
Blazin' - it's "similar" to mine meaning it had the part I wanted to show.  It is not mine.  Mine is an inline 6.  The power steering reservoir is the same though and since that's what I wanted to confirm it's what I was able to find to show.

Welcome to the site from Central California!!

With the engine off, remove the reservoir cap, wipe the dipstick off then momentarily reinstall the cap.  Remove the cap again and check the fluid level.  Add power steering fluid as necessary, but be careful not to overfill - the reservoir fills up quickly.  Add fluid in stages, a little bit at a time while rechecking the level, until it's between the ADD and FULL marks.  Don't add all the way to FULL, because the fluid will expand as it warms up.

Install the cap, start the engine and crank the steering wheel lock-to-lock 2 - 3 times.  Shut the engine off and recheck the fluid level.  If the fluid is foamy, let the vehicle sit for ~15 minutes then recheck the level - add as needed and repeat the process until the fluid level registers FULL on the dipstick, the fluid is not foamy, and the steering no longer growls as you turn the wheel back-and-forth.

Steering fluid dripping off the rear axle would represent one heck of a leak - the entire bottom of the truck would be saturated with steering fluid.  Unless that's the case, the leak at the rear axle is a separate issue.  Once you have filled the steering reservoir, have someone start the engine and cycle the steering wheel back-and-forth while you watch for fluid leaks from the pump, the hoses, and the steering gear.

It's difficult to know just how much you don't know until you know it.
In other words... if people learn by making mistakes, by now I should know just about everything!!!

Thanks bd :). I'm glad I found this site! Doubt I'll be much help to anyone asking questions but I'm sure I'll be "trolling" (in a learning not harassing way).
The process you gave is helpful. I'll give it a shot this weekend. Based on my experience over the last 4 years with this truck, I won't be surprised if it turns out to be a bigger problem.
