Weather stripping
« on: February 11, 2013, 07:23:45 pm »
How hard is it to replace weather stripping on your own? I just bought it for my vent windows and am going to install it. Also is there supposed to be weather stripping on the door here:

Do some searching on here before you take apart your vent windows. Those can be tricky and you'll do well to learn from others mistakes! The door seals are on the cab, not the door. Those are easy to replace. The only problem there will be making your doors hard to close. You might end up doing some adjusting. You can do it yourself....don't be afraid to ask questions! Shooting from the hip here, The door hinge pins were probably bad at some point and someone put weather stripping there to cut down the road noise. But in no way shape or form should there be weather stripping there.

Oh ok. Well the truck was made in Canada. Would that make a difference?

Ya. Just blows my mind why someone would put it on if it wasn't supposed to go there. Would it hurt anything?

Nope..... and those doors have so much built in adjustment if there is air noise generally with a little tweaking they'll seal tight.

Ok sounds good thanks for the info y'all. I just couldn't figure it out for anything. Where is the cheapest place to get weather stripping for the doors and windows? And how hard is it to do on your own?

If you're talking about the black sealant looking stuff on the seam, I'm wondering if at some point there was a new door skin installed? Looks like seam sealer to me.

Could have been. There isn't one spot of rust on the entire truck

+1 on seam sealer. the skin may not have been replaced it's possible that the previous owner actually took care of the truck and resealed it after it cracked. I did mine before it went to paint jail.
As far as the vent windows go. Try to find the two piece set. they are the not easiest to install because because of the metal tabs but they seel better than the one piece and you don't have to glue the rear section on to keep it in place. I did the single piece thinkingit would be better than OE but IMPO they inhale profusely!!   You shouldn't have to use any window sealant but get some just incase and make sure it's black and specifically for windows other wise it will change colors, fade crack peal and leak (knew this but tested my luck and re-enforced my knowledge with experience).

To get the vent window out of the door you will have to unbolt the whole window track and I recommend removing the window as well so you don't scratch the glass as you pull the vent widow support out of the door.  One more experienced tip....When you loosen the vent window tensioner if it looks the slightest bit rusty or frozen in any way use a penetrant like PB blaster and ease it off or you will do as I did and break off the pole which, leaves you with two options:1) find a replacement or 2) weld it back. I did the later and ended up slicing the palm of my hand with a razor blade (you could see all the tendons) while trimming the old weather stripping to use as a mock up for proper alignment.
I just did this recently so it's all still fresh in my mind. Any more questions just feel free to ask.

I got the 2 piece set in today. I plan on replacing all the glass since I have replaced the right and rear sliding already.  I read on a few other sites where people have changed them without removing any of that other stuff. Have you heard of this before?

Yes I have but the only way to get the seal to fit into the door properly is to loosen it as well as the rear track for the main window. No matter how you slice this one you will have to loosen/remove all the bolts that hold the window tracking in place. You do not have to pull the whole vent window assembly out of the door but it's the next step and in my opinion it's easier to work on with it out of the truck.  Besides that there's less of a risk of scratching the paint if you do it out of the truck as long as you are careful on removal and reinstallation.

One more thing I forgot to mention. If you do decide to remove the whole assembly you will have to remove the mirror cover and the lower bolt because it is attached to an "L" shaped brace the will prevent you from maneuvering the assembly.
