Tilt Column
« on: February 12, 2013, 02:58:31 am »
What year steering column with tilt will fit my '73 K10?  I don't want to change anything from the column I have, meaning I want to keep the turn signal lever and the hazards on the column, and that's it.  It is an auto and I think I just want the tilt option.

Any thoughts on that?

73 - 74 is what you need.  Capt. Already answered this question for you, are you looking for someone to tell you something different so you can buy one only to find out it will not work ?

I have a 74 & 77 both standard transmissions.  My 74 does not have tilt, while my 77 does.

CaptKaos was referring to the instrument cluster in that posting.

As for the steering column, you can use pretty much any 70's Chevy/GM truck steering columns. Some trucks may have had cruise on the turn signal lever, but that can be swapped out.  Depending upon the year model column you find, you may have to remove the wires from your new columns' wiring connector and plug each wire into the correct location on the old columns' wiring connector (in other words, the wiring is the same, the connectors and their wire location were different).

I replaced the column in my '74 Chevrolet K10 4spd truck with a column from a '78 C20 4 spd truck.  The only difference was the wiring in the column from the '78 had to be rewired into the '74 columns wiring connector.

My bad, that one is totally on me.  Sorry theaddictedchef, wrong info happens sometimes, or half asleep.  Thanks Jason S for catching it.

I read Bake's comment and got nervous.....  No big deal on any of this.  I appreciate the fact that someone will even talk to me.  When I start talking truck stuff, the wife stares at me with that blank "when will he stop talking??" look.  No worries on any of this.

Now... onto the steering column....if I understand this correctly, any 70's steering column will work.  Now I just need to find one with tilt and the same turn signal/hazard set up I have.  Gonna start that quest tomorrow.

As always, thanks for the comments.

That is funny, my wife is the same.  I wonder if your wife has the same blank, I don' care look that mine has most of the time when I start speaking about vehicle repairs to her.

I get all of the above, plus the inquiry as to "how much is it gonna cost?"...

That is so funny..... She has that glossed, "when is he going to stop talking?" look and I know I have lost her.  Yesterday she sat down on the couch and started to ask me a question.  This is EXACTLY the conversation she had with me - mind you I didn't say a SINGLE word.  Here goes - "What are your plans to(day was the word she was going for but stopped mid-word)......nevermind, you will be in the garage working on your truck.  I should have known that before I even asked.   When you get done, will you look at the curtain rod in the bedroom and see if you can hang that or what I need to do?  I need to go to Home Depot a little later and get a few things so I can pick up whatever you need to hang that.  Jake is going to stay here while I'm gone, so just check in with him when you get a minute."  That was the entire thing, and like I said, I didn't get the chance to say a single word.......

Pretty funny......
