Two leaks this week !!
« on: December 29, 2013, 08:14:50 pm »
73 Chevy 4x4
700R4 Trans

So to start off on my truck had been doing good for the past few weeks no problems . Until i noticed a small spot of transmission  fluid under my truck at the beginning of the week . i didn't have time to work on it until this weekend but i kept a close  eye on the leak and noticed every time i park it would drip a puddle the size of my fist nothing to bad. So today i get under the truck and take a look and the trans is saturated in fluid from the pan back. I pull the torque converter cover off to check up in there everything was dry. So i focused on the trans pan and started to check the torque on the bolts. All of the bolts where about half to three quarters turn loose. So i tighten it down and its still doing it i checked the lines going to radiator they where also dry and in good shape.  Wheres a good place to start this is my first automatic transmission i have ever owned lol. And it was rebuilt about 7500 Miles ago.

Second problem today when i was working on it had the truck parked on a small slope with the wheel turned going down with the slope and i notice the front axle on that side started leaking gear oil out. Cleaned the spot really good and checked didn't see anything wrong. i pulled the truck on the flat spot in the drive way checked again nothing leaking out any more took it for a ride and looked still no leaking. Check the level of the fluid in the front diff when i pulled the plug out it started to spill out a little bit so its fool.  Thanks for the help sorry for the story

Did you determine that the pan was leaking?  Overtightening the bolts could crush the gasket causing more leaks.

Is the front leaking past the seal?

This ^^^^^^

...plus overtightening will also distort the pan flange, so it's no longer flat.  You may need to straighten the pan flange at this point.  Additionally, use a mirror to inspect the rubber grommets (top-hat seals) that fit in between the fill tube and the case and the TV cable and the case.  Fluid leaks from either of these 'tophat' seals can leak down and track along the pan flange and appear to be the pan gasket.

Transmission is not leaking anymore I was careful not to over tighten the bolts. The front axle still is not leaking either must just been the way i was parked and had the wheel turned putting stress on it. I am running 37" they are really hard on stuff.

Invest in a torque wrench as soon as it's possible to do so. I know from experience that what I THINK a particular torque setting feels like vary wildly from what it actually is.
