NP208 or NP241

This there a huge difference between the np208 and np241??? I have heard the 241 is stronger, I was just curious how much stronger and are they a direct bolt on to our trucks (because I know some come from newer body style trucks where the shifter is on the driver side). Just curious because I can get my hands on a np241 out of a 1990 blazer (so should be passenger side) for $100 and I am curious if it is a lot better then my np208, I have in my truck for my project.

The np241 came factory on my 89 v2500 burb, so I am assuming it is a more heavy duty transfer case. I like having it because it is "shift on the fly" you can go from 2HI to 4HI while rolling.

"shift on the fly" alone is worth the switch to me. I plan on doing the swap eventually, but if I found one for $100 I would pull the trigger.

                  The 241 is geared a little lower than the 208 and considered to be an upgrade from the 208 . I wouldn't consider it a huge upgrade. Somewhere around 1990 I believe they switched to a electronic speed sensor so you may not be able to use your speedometer cable .

IIRC, 208 is 2.6:1 and 241 is 2.72:1.  not a huge difference.

Okay that's what I was reading online, ratio was a little lower and the 241 had a better oiling system. But to me I already have a np208 for my project and I know its solid. Plus I have a np208 on my "rusty but trusty" truck I drive now and it works great. Especially since I am not doing any off-roading, mostly use the 4x4 for snow here in Michigan, and every once in a while a muddy yard in the summer. Thanks for the input :)

Ya but only at low speeds right? Below something like 15mph? As appose to the 241 shifting at any speed? That's what I thought at least.

Im not sure on the 241 shifting on the fly at any speed, I havent tried over 15mph.

No and the 241 isn't an upgrade. The 208 is much more plentiful and cost effective as well.

IIRC, CUCVs came with 208s in them as well, so there shouldn't be a question of stoutness.
