Unless you live in an area that has emissions laws, the year shouldn't matter.  Generally, if there are emissions laws the engine has to be the same year as the vehicle or newer.

I'm not sure but I think a 700R4 should bolt up to any small-block Chevy.

But why do you want to get rid of the 305?  More power or just needs a rebuild?  What gears do you have in your differentials?  Do you run big tires?  It's possible a gear swap might help achieve some of your goals.  Just some questions/thoughts.

Is it a TH350-C (the one with the lockup converter)?  The TH350 was discontinued in 1984.
Most places list the more popular 700R4 for the 82-87 trucks.  BUT it won't mate to the TH350 transfer case without and adapter.

im running 35" tires on stock gears.....im going through gas likes its air. I figure dropping a sbc 350....290hp and maybe boosting ntorque to 325-350. its a heavy load trying to get those tires moving from a stop with the 305. also isn't cheaper to build on a 350 than a 305?

you might want a stick shift. or change axles, for a better ratio. 3/4 you are more likely to have 4.10 which would help with turning tires even 3.73 would be good, that 700r4 has od so that would save you some also.
