Body side molding removal..How?
« on: July 02, 2014, 03:11:08 pm »
I've tried searching for this with no luck so could someone tell me the procedure for removing the side body molding on my 85 k10 silverado? It's glued on and I'm thinking a heat gun might do it, but any advice would be a good thing..
Thanks

I used a plastic putty spreader and patience.  After getting it off I used a rubber eraser to get the glue off..  And more patience.

You can see progress here:

Thanks Chris, I got the spreader, not sure about the patience though.
'How about the aluminum corner trim under the tail lights? Is a tool necessary or do they push pull off.

pretty sure the trim just snaps off the tails. take the lights out and u should be able to get the trim off with ease.

when i got my 77 cheyenne it still had all the original body trim. so ugly and such a pain to remove. i wasnt worried about the paint because i was already planning to repaint the truck so i just soaked the glue with paint thinner then scraped it off with a stiff sharp putty knife. but if you are worried about your paint do what Capt said

x3 on what Capt said. your local parts store should have a  "pin stripe wheel" that you can use on a drill to remove glue, and double sided tape. its basically a big eraser

I used guitar strings and a hot day it nearly all came off cleanly. I used ice on the remaining glue as heat made it really gum up my tool which was a rubber soft plug on a drill a the body shop pin strip remover was a waste of money and time,it just didn't do it, I also used copper strips on a magnent to cover any holes from the back side and weld them shut, this is just how I did it and theres prolly others who have more knowledge on this but in Montana there aint many shops of any kind around the corner kinda a geographic oddity everything is at least 5 days away and overnite is two days and many phone calls

Are you planning on re-using the trim ?

I will be reusing the corners under the taillights but not the vinyl sections along the length of the truck.
Thanks for all the replies.

If you remove the tail light assemblies & look down in there I believe that you will see two speed nuts that hold that trim on.
As far the side moldings guitar strings works good, I good edged putty knife an inch or so wider than the trim works. You can get an attachment for an air chisel to peel them off as well.
The pinstripe erasers work good for vinyl but not glue.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs
