transmission question 700r4
« on: September 10, 2004, 11:26:00 am »
I have a 700r4 that came out of a newer truck, say 93-94 probally. It doesn't have a place for detent or vacuum lines.Only an electrical plug.My truck is an 85c10.Motor is a .350 manufactured between 69-76.I dont have any of the computer stuff in my truck that I have seen. Will this transmission work in my truck?Someone said that you can take 2 of the wires for the plug and twist them together and it will shift.(not sure which 2,there are 4 total I think)Any help would be great.

                       thanks,
                                 David

Took the truck out last night. The transmission feels like it is taking off in second gear. I shifted into first and it does the same thing. Also the tranny will not shift on its own if I'm in drive.Bad transmission? What do you guys think?

ps-I don't have the electrical plug in the tranny right now.I've got to look and see if the old one had the same plug.

I talked to a tech at a local transmission shop today. He says the transmission will not work because it is completely controlled by ECM.No vacuum or tv cable .So I guess its time to hunt, yet again, for another transmission.

The tech is wrong.  The 85-92 700R4's are NOT controlled by an ECM.  That is the 93-up 4L60E's.

Yeah, I'm not sure of the year model it came from.Maybe it is the 4l60e.I do know its a 4 speed.I'm gonna look again for detent and vacuum connections, just to be absolutely sure I haven't missed anything. Thanks for the info.

Sounds like you've got a 4L60E transmission to me. The valve body is controlled by solenoids, so the ECM is in complete control of the transmission's shift points. I don't think there's any way to get around that either. You may be able to find a conversion kit of some sort, with a vaccume modulator, and valve body. The hard parts are basicly the same as a 700R4, the torque converter is probably a lock up type, with a lock up solenoid, another thing that you'll most likely have to convert. I'll ask around at work, and see if anyone knows if it's possible.
