Transmission removal issue
« on: September 05, 2014, 07:59:48 pm »
Hey all,
I'm in the process of doing an engine swap in my 77 K10. The engine is out and I want to get the tranny checked out but I can't get the darn thing to come out!
I figured I could just pull it foward towards where the engine was and not have to remove any of the drive trains? All linkage, cables, bolts and mounting bolts have been removed, still no budge.  Do I need to take the crossmember off? Or maybe the tranny isn't at the right angle to slide forward?

Thanks,
Derik

Probably a bolt still in it

What's holding the front of the trans up ?

Maybe put a jack under the trans and see if it's will lift off the cross member

I'd say you gotta drop the cross member to get the trans out

Is the transmission mount still in the crossmember?

I currently have a jack under the front of transmission holding it.
Both mounting bolts are removed and the 7 bolts that were bolting it to the transfer case. The mount itself (rubber piece) is still there.
Maybe I did miss one bolt?

I'd probably remove the transfer case first

Never seen anyone take out the trans while leaving the t case in

Thanks for the replies, i ended up getting another jack and taking both down together.
Ended up being I couldn't get the right leverage, laying under the truck, with a crow bar to separate them.  Once they were out they came apart easily.
But good side I get to degrease both and everything will be put back much cleaner and tidy than before!

To make it easier to re install. Take the bolts holding he trans to the engine to a hardware store and buy some that are about twice as long

Cut the heads off.  And hacksaw a slot in the end where you cut the head off

Then screw these in (the slot is for a screwdriver )
Then you can slide the trans on and the headless bolts will support the weight.

Then you just swap the regular bolts back in one at a time
