Smoke is never a good thing?

Ok so I just got this 81 k10 with a 350/350 the guy before had removed the tranny crossmember and all mounts, so the tranny was hanging low and so was the engine, put the cross member and tranny mounts put a new rotor and cap on the distributer because the old one was messed up dew to the engine being tilted, cranked it up and theres smoke coming out of the oil cap.... any ideas?

Before PCV valves, all engines smoked from the oil breather.  So I assume no PCV valve connected?

i would imagine if there is smoke coming out of the oil cap then its not sealed and there would be oil coming out aswell.

that smokes gotta vent somewhere though im with rich on the pcv valve.

it should look like one of these setups. top and bottom are same with the valve being on the left and breather on the right. but yours could be opposite i know both my trucks are

Oh yeah I have those, never new what it was called, thanks for the help, now it has a we bit a smoke coming from the distributer/behind the motor area, doesn't smell weird or anything so im guessing tranny/engine oil burn off

Lol ineed to make an oil catcher for my pvc valve when i am hammering down on the highway will throw some oil smoke around 95-100 mph at 5500-6000 rpm lol i just drove 2 hours from dubois to pgh on route 28 up and down hills all the way ugh! I need   another gear or 2

Clean off the engine and retry.  The block shouldn't be getting hot enough to burn oil on the back side.  If there is smoke I would find out where it is coming from.
