Help! 79 suburban won't start
« on: December 16, 2014, 01:36:17 pm »
I've got a 1979 suburban with the original 350 engine and I was driving it the other day and came to a stop for a bit and it was idling and all of a sudden it just dies and will not restart and so I pulled it home and the next day it fired right up and I let it run for a bit then died again and now I cannot get it to restart at all. I've been going through the checklist and it isn't getting any spark. I've replaced the distributor rotor and cap and still no spark. Id appreciate any help so I don't have a yard ornament for Christmas ha

Have you checked to see if you are getting power to the distributor?

I believe so. I was getting power out of one of the single wires that plugs into the distributer cap. It had a white plug end I believe. The rest of the wires didn't have any power. Not sure if it should have power to any other wires or not.

coil, icm or pick up coil. you can take the coil and icm to a parts store they should be able to test it (and test it multiple times to make sure it gets hot) but ideally you can buy a whole new distributor for under 50 on ebay. some on here are running them with no problems

I'm running a $45 eBay HEI distributor, I had it close to two years now on a daily driver and been very satisfied with the performance, got it from this store:

If it has b+ at the distributor and you are sure it is spinning your next step would be to check the ignition control module and pickup coil. I'm sure your distributor is out of warranty so either get a new one or replace the module. Measure the resistance of the pickup coil while you are in there too.
