starter issue

can someone please help. i finally got around to break my rebuild 355 in today and went to turn key and the starter engage but is grinding. never had this problem with the 305 that came out so i went and bought a new starter for a 350. installed the new starter same thing happens. looks as thought the starter teeth is only engaging not even half the flywheel teeth. i think i might half to buy a new flywheel but that might not solve my problem as though the starter teeth is not engaging even half the flywheel. i checked and the engine deck for starter is not warped or cracked. could it be that i have the flywheel installe backwards. please help and can some one please instruct me on how to properly shim a starter. thanks and can someone please help.\!!!

Is it a flexplate or a flywheel?

Did you put the correct one in for the 350?

sorry its a flexplate and yes its the correct one for a 350

Ok guys ran into a problem. got the motor broke in and ran into another issue. the back starter bolt hole on the block is cracked!!!! and the bolt will not tighten up, And also the starter deck is not straight!!!! mane i am maddd!!! the block is a late 70's block and it has the third hole in the block for mounting a starter with the bolt holes straight across. and it didnt have a starter brace nore the hole in the side to add one. can someone please please help me its a 350 sbc with the 168 tooth flywheel and the starter bolt are offset. is there a way i can fix this without pulling the motor back out

You can buy one that bolts straight across instead of the offset style. Like this one http://www.summitracing.com/parts/pwm-9000 I bought for my 350. Bolted right up to my block and didn't require any shimming for me.
