1/2 ton to 1 ton Front Suspension Conversion
« on: March 17, 2015, 08:31:14 pm »
I have a 1977 C10 Suburban w/ a Trailering Special.   It has a 1 ton Dana 70 Dually rear end and still has the stock 1/2ton front suspension AND it already has a JB7 brake system.  I'm planning on converting it to a 1 ton front suspension with dually rims in the front.  I already have the 1 ton rotors and spindles.  I'm fairly certain tie rods are the same between 1/2 and 1 tons.  So, is all i need upper and lower 1 ton control arms, bolt them in and BOOM....1 ton?  OR is there a catch?

I am pretty that is all you need.  I am pretty sure the tie rods arent different, but spindles and balljoints are.

Its seriously that easy?  Just unbolt and rebolt new parts?  I can get Mevotech upper and lower control arms with ball joints for under $50 a piece from RockAuto.  Any feedback on whether or not i should go a different route with brands?  I'm also assuming i can reuse my 1/2 front coil springs as well?

the 1T Springs are a LOT different than the 1T, but if you are lowered....
If you can find the whole crossmember you could remove the whole thing and swap them out.  Keep in mind the 1 Ton frame is different than the 1/2T so it won't ever be a 1T...

Eventually, i want the truck lowered to a degree, but for right now, im focusing on getting the front suspension upgraded to a 8 lug dually rim to match the back.  So i figured, the only way to do that is to get the proper 1 ton suspension components.  Yes, im aware it'll never be a true 1 ton because of the frame differences.  I'm ok with that. I just want to make sure the control arms will bolt in and function properly. The rear end and rear suspension is set up to pull just about anything and already rides like a dumptruck.  Just looking for functionality in the front not true 1 ton frame, etc.  I just need to be able to get a dually rim on the front.  So if i'm going about this the wrong way, please stop me and let me know a better way to do it.

Nope, you are on the right track if that is your intention,  Just saying you might can get the whole front section cheaper.  I used to buy the whole rolling front crossmember out from under them when I was sectioning them for $100...
