How did this happen?
« on: February 03, 2003, 04:42:00 pm »
I'm getting ready to replace the window rubber in my 76 Chevy 4x4.  I removed the door panel on the driver's door and was checking out the door lock and opening linkage inside the door.  I ALSO was playing with the locking mechanism that contacts the door striker bolt.  Anyway to make a long story short, I shut the door and now it won't open.  I've tried holding the inside opening lever and pushing with my feet but it just doesn't seem to want to unlatch.

Any ideas?

I had an 85 C-20 that gave me problems with the door too. I had to try to open from the outside, after the door had been locked, inserted the key, and opened the door, like there was never a problem.
1) Lock the door
2) try to open the door from outside
3) then unlock from the outside
4) open the door from the outside.
It should open right up.
If not, well I have no clue!

Do you still have the inner dor panel off? If you do you should be able to reach in side, unlock, and unlatch your door. if not take it off. My 84 K10 has a querky door latch too. To unlock it with the key you need to bomp the door under the lock with the side of your fist or the lock cylined wont turn.

Blazin get yourself some nice like chain and cable lube.  My locks were the same way but I shot them with some oil and they worked like brand new!  You want something that's fairly water-resistant.  I stuck the stem in the key hole and juiced it down and then worked the key in and out and the locks back and forth.

Thanks for your reply. Got it open by laying across the seat and pushing with (2) feet at the striker bolt level while a friend pulled and used operated the door handle.

Looks like the lock itself jammed across the striker bolt.  Removed it, ordered another new one.  Standing by until it arrives.  This was my first "post  to this site.  Thanks for your help!!!

Tried that it didn't make much diference just dosn't do it all the time since then. I'm rebuilding the whole truck this summer so I will mess with it then. It's off the road for now it needs alot of work to take a sticker I have nice used doors, new inner/outer fenders, new cab corners, rockers, floor pans/suports, and a prety clean 85 bed for it. Nice gray interior. It has brown in it now as the truck is also brown. It will be corvette yellow. As far as mechanical parts just a new set of headers so far. Exhaust was new last winter. I did the brakes and front end for the previous owner, parts have about 80,000 miles on them so I'm sure I will need to replace all that stuff.
