Trans Noise?
« on: March 30, 2015, 09:52:23 pm »
Ive got an '83 with a manual trans.  The throw out bearing has been recently replaced, less than 1000 miles.  Trans/truck is making a spinning noise when in gear and foot off the gas mostly.  The noise is sometimes there when accelerating, but more prominent when foot is off the gas.  Best I can describe it is a semi loud spinning/whirling noise.  Its not clunking or knocking or anything, just sounds like something spinning.  Any ideas?

Did it do this prior to the throw out bearing being replaced?

Make sure you have gear oil in it, and then I would say it's bearings.  Either counter shaft or main shaft.  As long as it has oil, you it should be safe for around 8k miles.  It will only get worse until you can't stand it any more.  Wait too long, and you may be replacing more components.  This only holds water if you step on the clutch and the noise goes away at a stop.  The check doesn't hold water if you do it while coasting.

Was the pilot bushing replaced when the throwout bearing? If it was not replaced when the clutch/throwout bearing, it will make a spinning noise. It is kinda like an airplane engine. It takes about two months before it heats up enough to seize and start working correctly if it is the pilot bushing. Don't ask me how I know this......
It's been a LONG time since I have been called a newbie. Just sayin....

It was not making this noise to my knowledge prior to the throw out bearing being replaced.  Long story short, I bout the truck from a guy, it needed a head job (leaky valves).  Pulled the motor to go through the top and bottom to ensure everything looked okay.  Turns out the bottom end had been rebuilt by a previous owner.  Everything looked brand new.  Got the heads worked, put a new clutch and throwout bearing on while I had the engine pulled.  I checked the trans fluid last week, topped everything off, it isn't leaking anywhere (to my knowledge)

I did not replace the pilot bushing.  Maybe this was a mistake?

And this noise didn't start immediately after everything was put back together.  I put the motor back in late January.  This noise suddenly popped up a couple weeks ago.  This truck isn't an every day driver, just a weekend here and there kinda deal.  Noise only happens while in gear, and clutch pedal not pushed in.  The noise is not constant either, very intermittent.
