Oil pressure guage
« on: April 25, 2015, 10:16:14 am »
My oil pressure gauge is typically maxed out (beyond 60). Sometimes it is on though and runs between 30-60 and goes over 60 qt high revs. Is it the gauge or sender?

Check the sender ohmage when the gauge is pegged.
If the sender was installed with Teflon tape it could be electrically insulating the threads from the block.
The sender is 1/8" NPT.  NPT is a tapered threadform that's self sealing as long as the threads are undamaged...  You shouldn't need thread sealer

Hatzie's advice is sound. That is how you'll determine whether the sender is the problem or not.  You can do the same with the gauge too.....testing resistance (Ohm).

Regardless, if you're not confident that your oil pressure gauge is being honest...I would suggest that you remove the sender (or hook up to another port in your intake/head/block) and monitor your pressure with a reliable mechanical sender.  Despite, the functionality of your oil pressure sender or gauge....you should be sure that your oil pressure is correct.  I had a similar problem recently that, unfortunately, led to a full rebuild.....though I will add that high pressure is much better than too low of pressure.

Hey, sorry to hijack the thread but it is related. I'm working with the factory oil pressure gauge and it has 3 posts. I'm trying to figure out which one is ground, positive, and for the sender. I do not have the truck, just the gauge. I want to test it, it is out of the cluster. Attached are pics of the gauge in question. If anyone can tell me which posts are what that'd be very helpful

pin on the bottom should be ground. For the sender it will be the 1 not common to the
other gauges as looking from the back at the printed circuit
