suggest me a cam
« on: August 14, 2015, 08:27:20 pm »
I wanna go with a smaller cam
Motor is a 355
6" rod
Forged crank and rods,
Wiseco flat top Pistons,
arp bolts
540 lift hydraulic cam  (Too big)
PRW 350 3/8 1.6l roller rockers
Weiand intake
Edelbrock 750
Headman long tube headers
What would you all suggest?

I'm going to be using the truck for trips to the store for beer and smokes. Getting items from Menards from time to time.  Trips to the sand dues and some mud bogging.

What's the existing camshaft duration at 0.050" and engine compression ratio?  How about transmission, drive gear & tire diameter?  Have the heads been reworked?

In other words... if people learn by making mistakes, by now I should know just about everything!!!

Call a few cam manufacturer's tech lines.
Have all the above mentioned info plus vehicle/weight. Let them tell you what is best for your combo/purpose.
Check with more than one.
They want you to be happy with their product.

completion cams xtreme energy, by far my favorite. I had run a 268 & 280 high energy comps & this cam blew them away, I would probably go down in carb size also. My motor was virtually identical to what yours is.

I agree on the carb size. I plan in trying to trade the 750 for a 600-650

That should work.  Make sure you change the lifters, required for any cam change, and make sure you change the valve springs, required for that amount of lift.  Use the COMP recommended lifters and springs.  Run it in as per instructions, and use ZDDP in your oil, even after break-in.

As you suspect, the carb is too big.  A normally aspirated 350 cannot pump more than 500 cfm.  You will get better response and mileage from the proper carb.

Once you are set up, you should be looking at 300+ hp at 4500 and 400+ lbft at 2500, which are nice numbers.  Go much over that and you will need to redesign the whole drivetrain to keep from dumping parts on the street.

I ran vac secondary & double pumpers but by far the best was a built qjet by a very good builder. Best part was the carb was an even trade for the two holleys as the guy I traded couldn't leave well enough alone & wanted a holley. Another nice pick me up was  lighter springs in the HEI.

Thank you for the input. I plan on going a monster trans and planning on going over to a 205 TC and I ahve 3/4 ton axles that I need to rebuild and put in.

I splattered a few trannies over the years. Best one that lasted me the longest was a T400 with A1 22% cut planetaries. I ran 2 sets of TCI 11% but they were just modified 700r sets. I sheared both in half. TCI was good & gave full refund but it was total teardown of the tranny each time. 205 was also best case I ran never had a single issue with either of the two I used. Biggest lesson learned was not to use a stall converter, I broke three new dacco brand of various stalls. Only one that lasted me was a stock one from a school bus. That was an expensive two summers.
