My world it turning upside down
« on: August 22, 2015, 08:22:25 am »
I got word in the last 2 weeks that my position at work is being eliminated.  Even though I was the most recent hire in our group I have the most years in service.  They did offer me a position in the St. Louis market that would require a move.  With no choice in the matter if I wanted to continue my employment (I need 3 more years till I am eligible for retirement) I signed on the dotted line.  19+ years in the same place.  It is hard to fathom moving but I must.  Exciting and scary all at once.  My new job starts the day after Labor day.

As long as you & your loved ones are healthy, nothing else in life matters.
Hopefully you will find a house with a big garage. That will make the move easiey to deal with.

Embrace it as an adventure and be conservative until you settle in.  Once you learn the layout and new routines, it will become fun with new friends made in a fresh new environment and untold potential.  A big new garage would certainly be a plus!

This

Now you gotta decide if you wanna just rent a place for three years and retire and move back.  Or move there permanently

Hope your new job is gonna be miles and miles away from all the riots and looting and burning

I haven't seen the territory maps but it will be a region with the store that services those customers being in St. Louis which I would be tied to.  Oddly enough Ferguson isn't that far away from the route I will travel too.  I am pretty much set on a place but my wife has to be happy there too.  I know the area fairly well and family is close by.  I'd love to put roots down there but the old saying goes, Happy Wife, Happy life.  The story has to play out at least to June when my youngest graduates college.  We are going down there next weekend to check it out...

I've noticed that a lot of big companies do this kind of thing to folks nearing retirement. They announce a restructuring and then offer you a lump sum and early retirement, or make you move to some distant place. The folks who move end up doing the work of 5 people because everyone else got laid off. Seems kind of chicken to me but maybe I'd feel differently if I ran a big company.

Best of luck to you.

All that matters is if they salt their roads or not!  Hate winter, hate salty roads...my c-10 hates em too.

Just kidding, read Proverbs 3:5,6.

Zeig, what do you do for work?

Sherwin-Williams, Product Finishes Division.  We sell and service the OEM and tier 1 and 2 type companies that paint.  About 1.5 years ago they asked me to join their equipment sales group to install spray systems and complete spray lines.  As the economy is not doing well at all, despite what you read in the news, they need me to do my previous job as a Technical Service Rep down out of the St. Louis market requiring me to move.  I am fortunate I still have a job and am actually looking forward to getting out of the real harsh winters.  I will be 290 miles from my Indiana home.  Here is the place we are going to staying at.  The driveway is 1/4 mile roughly.  Picture was taken from the road.

Well good luck and I hope it all works out to be a blessing. It's tough to move for a job but sounds like you have the right attitude. Maybe you'll even find better opportunities. Don't be getting rid of your trucks now

I have a plan alright but God is going to lead me.  My mission field is changing.  Trucks are being put on hold for now until I either plant roots there or eventually return to my home in Indiana.  My extended cab will continue to be on the market as I want to build one anyway. My rental has a 1.5 car garage so my tools/air compressor/tire machine are coming with.  Life will be different as empty nesters.  My kids will take care of the Indiana home for now and we will evaluate our situation come spring when the youngest finishes up at Purdue.

As the economy is not doing well at all, despite what you read in the news,

Oh, I'm not the only one who's noticed the profound disconnect between news and reality? I have a rule, when they start lying, I turn them off...forever.

The Ivy League smart guys are doing their best to hold this economy together long enough to steal the last few things not nailed down then jump in their helicopters for Belize. Then it all comes down. I keep telling people that the only safe investments are land, away from populated areas, that you can grow food on and the tools to work that land. I think they're getting ready to listen.
