2 New Interior items
« on: November 22, 2015, 05:12:16 pm »
Well I recently picked up 2 new things for the truck. One is a center console for the bench seat and the other is a steering wheel. Got them both for half off the price of free.

The console came out of another square that my girlfriend's brother and I stripped. He needed a donor frame for the body shop that's fixing his truck from an accident back in May, that's a story for another time tho. It's cut and built to the shape of the seat, covered in vinyl that was a very ugly color grey. Has 2 cup holders and a storage area with a lid that's a padded arm rest. I wish I took pics when I got it, it was disgusting, almost vomit inducing. The vinyl was dirty from never being cleaned, it was brown, the carpet in it was gross, the lid had tear in it and it had a map/envelope hold strap around the sides that was stretched and just as gross, infect it was so dirty it was grimie and sticky.

I gloved up and used heavy duty interior cleaner from work, got it all cleaned up, it got back to the original color. I also vacuumed and cleaned the carpet inside it and cut the map strap off. I removed the plastic cup holder insert, still need to repaint that, probably going to plasti-dip it. I refreshed it with a can of SEM Color Coat in Cordovan Brown to match my pillar and headliner trim. I also removed the lid before I used the SEM, then when it was done, put the lid back on. Now it's over at a local upholstery shop, they are recovering the lid in a nice leather to match the SEM color and possibly putting a detail trim along the bottom edges in vinyl to match the SEM color and cover up the corners where the vinyl is fraying a bit but not enough to validate a complete recover of the entire unit. It's nice cuz when the gf wants to sit in the middle, I can just slide the console over and then slide it back when the middle isn't used or take it out on the rare occasions I have a full cab with 3 heads. Plus I now jump from 2 to 4 cup holders. Some of you are familiar with the Blazer/Suburban console I cut and fitted to ride the trans hump between the dash and front of the bench seat.

Here it is before I sent it to the upholstery shop, I'll post another pic when I get it back and the cup holder is refinished.

Now the steering wheel. I thought that was an aftermarket piece, turns out it's a factory unit off of 70's era Chevelle's, Camaro's, Vega's and I think a few others. It's RPO code is NK4 - 4 Spoke Sport Wheel. I believe it came from a Vega as it has the red GT emblem that was from my searching used on the Vega GT models on the horn button. These are not mine but mine looks exactly the same.

This is the wheel.

This is the horn button it has.

This wheel was actually in pretty good shape, so after 2 thorough cleanings with the same cleaner the console got, it was clean enough to get refinished with the same can of SEM brown as the console. I'll post a pic of that as soon as I take one. I plan to get a sew on leather wheel cover from a company called WheelSkins. I'll post a pic of that also as soon as I get it.

Also, the GT emblem will be removed and I plan to get a new reproduction black and white bowtie emblem for it from Classic Industries which will match the truck much better.

I like the wheel I have now but it's getting pretty old, the material is degrading and it's pretty worn down in some spots. The material is becoming sticky on the backbside because of ths sun light degrading it and age. The NK4 wheel is in much better shape and looks new with the SEM on it.

This is my current wheel.

Stay tuned for updates as new pieces arrive.

Most people just upgrade to a newer 88-94 leather wrapped wheel. You went all out lol.

Cup holders are the only reason I wish I had push button 4wd. I'd say I need more storage as well but it would likely be another thing I clean out once a year and wonder why did I keep this and the usual ' I've been looking for that'!

Yea don't like em. Their old anyway now too so the leather would have been worn anyway. Like I said, it was free and still cheaper then a new aftermarket wheel or an OEM wheel in good shape.

The wheel.......of fortune hahahaha

Another 7 digit GM pn 9752585.

Also, was at the local Orchard Supply Hardware store this evening, picked up a latch for the console compartment door/arm rest. It had no way to stay shut, gravity was the only thing holding the lid down. Take a sharp turn or slam on the brakes, bye bye whatever is inside. So I found a magnetic latch for kitchen cabinets or like living room furniture that has doors. 3 and a 1/4 bucks took it home with me. It should do the job just fine.

This picture is just proof that none of us can help ourselves. It doesn't matter if it is a coffee can or an old makup container or even a large spice jug...WE WILL FIND AND ALTERNATE USE FOR IT!! Man law!!

So I forgot that I have my head unit down there to. I old hide it but it has a remote so I don't have to bend over and potentially run someone over. But a cup holder on the driver's side would be great.

You must be referring to the pub mix jug I converted to a resealable, portable zip tie tote with 360° viewing window to monitor zip tie count and color. Hahaha.

That's it. You can't sneak one past me despite the customization (removing the sticker). It was the hinge point in the center that gave it away. With that description you gave you could probably post them up for $10 and have all pub mix you'll ever need.

Hahaha never took the sticker off! It's on the back side with ZIP TIES in big, black sharpee across the label. Hinges?! It doesn't have a door lol, it's got a screw on top!

You thought that was good, you should see what other stuff I've converted lol I used an old soup can as an oil bath for my performance wet air filter for my go kart.

Well the center console is done, I haven't repainted the cup holder but I will eventually. I haven't done anything more with the steering wheel yet.

I think it turned out pretty nice, looks better than 45 bucks for sure, that's all I spent on it.
