Breaks
« on: December 01, 2015, 06:37:07 pm »
I am going to replace breaks on my truck, 84 k10 and at some point the rear axle was swaped to an 8 lug 14 bolt rear end. I am unsure of how to identify what Parys to buy because I have no idea what does to the axle. Is thier any way to tell what parts I need (drum, shoes, springs Ect) without knowing the year of the axle? Any help would be appreciated

So you have 6 lug wheels on the front and 8 lug wheels on the back? Sounds like your best bet is to use a K20 application for parts look up.

P.S. Brakes not Breaks. There not their.

Pretty sure it's a full floater. I'll post a pic tomorrow afternoon when I'm around it!

Based on what I can see of the drum, thats a 3/4 ton 14 bolt full floater with the smaller 11" drums. The smaller drums being the giveaway that its a 3/4 ton axle, as thats the only appreciable difference.

To be sure, pop the drum off and measure the inside diameter. 11" would be a 3/4 ton, 13" would be either 3/4 or 1 ton.

How exactly does the drum come off, after I take the tire off it doesn't move and I don't really know much about drum brakes.

I think the early 14bolts you have to remove hub and wheel bearings. If it was or is a dually axle you have to remove hub to remove drum. Got a pic of drum with wheel removed?

Thats correct, removal of the drum is facilitated by removal of one of the axle shafts, then the wheel, and then you might have to back off the adjusters to slide the drum off.
