Shift linkage issues

My truck had been shifting into all of the gears fine and now I have to play with the selector all of the sudden to get it into reverse and park and when I backed it up last night thier was a squeak coming from something. Not really sure how to fix this maybe a new shift linkage? Because the transmission had been working fine before.

Check the nut at the transmission that the lever rod slides into.  It is a 1/2" socket.  More than likely that loosened up.

I doubt it is that one, check where that bent rod that is sorta L shapes slides in the slotted u-bracket on the side of the transmission.  Pull the cotter key, the nut I am referring to is what holds that bracket on the transmission.

But should that one move? The piece that comes from up top at the gear shift moves around a little bit in that slot. I am in process of removing pin currently, it's being tough and doesn't wanna come out.

The rod does not come out of the slot easily, I got it almost out and couldn't get it any more. Is their something special I should do?

Try turning the U shaped bracket.....you will probably have to loosen the bolt that clamps the long rod from the top of the shifter ear.

The U shaped bracket will click from PRND21

That bolt you are talking about is loose, but is all rusted and I do not want to break it. I do have a shift linkage kit on the way though.

There's your problem. That rod is supposed to be all the way thru the bracket on the shift shaft with a codder pin thru it so it doesn't do exactly like you have and almost fall out.

I have had mine off several times, and I usually remove the long rod from the equation and I can then turn the U bracket and release the "bent" rod.

if memory serves me it can be removed while in park but neutral or drive un-binds things

justin did you buy the shifter kit off ebay?

I was able to tighten the bolt on the transmission and it still doesn't shift well. When I move the piece on the transmission everything moves fine and it actually goes into park.
I bought the shift kit from an online vendor.
