help identifying shocks
« on: March 13, 2016, 08:02:17 am »
Hey everyone, i have a 76 k10 im in the process of fixing up and my front leaf springs are sagging quite a bit, the po said he thinks at one point in time someone put some kind of lift springs on it in the front and helper springs in the back, but when i look at it, it almost looks like the shocks in the front are too short. Unfortunately they are not the original shocks, and i cant find any info on them, im hoping yall could help me out. Hopefully the picture will attach and feel free to ask for more info, ill give you what i can. Thanks in advance

A few more pictures would be helpful. Usually shocks have a number stamped on the bottom. Measure your shock with the truck sitting on the ground. That length should be about half way between the extended and compressed length of the new shock. We are running H7058 which is 25" extended and 15" compressed. Installed on the truck it should measure about 20" giving 5" of travel in either direction. On the rear we're using H7073 30" extended, 17" compressed and has 12" of travel (I'm rounding off the numbers). We have a 4" lift. These are Skyjacker part #'s.

ill see if i can get some more pics when i get home in the morning, i have to resize the crap out of them on my phone so a big picture turns into a tiny one lol. What kinda has me thinking that they are at full extension is that when i had my truck up on a jack the suspension on the driver side didnt drop at all, and putting it back down, it didnt go up at all. And because i know that the first thing in common sense is using it... Ill go ahead and throw in that i didnt have the jack on the front axle, i had it on a jacking point that the suspension should have flexed.

Can't help on brand or size, but I will say that coil-over shocks like that are ridiculous on these truck unless you are trying to jump it.

The front springs have a negative arch from the factory, for instance, my 83 k10 has stock height 2 leaf front springs and sitting level the center of the shackle bolts are about 1.5" lower than the middle of the springs, so your's may not be sagging as much as you think.

As rusted as those shocks are they're probably pretty old, and the fact they aren't moving at all when you raise and lower the truck, I would say just replace them with some decent new shock the right size.
