what should my timing be?
« on: April 17, 2016, 04:11:42 pm »
'83 k-10 with the 305. I am missing the emissions decal so I'm not certain what it should be set at. The truck will crank and start fairly well cold, but bogs down terribly starting hot. Cranks fine, but once it fires its almost as if the idle is set too low and unless I really gas it once it's in gear, it will stall.

Thanks!
Jim

Thanks! So, I checked it today and just as with my Olds, the ring on the balancer must have slipped, because setting the timing to near 8* the truck won't even start. The mark isn't even anywhere near the timing plate now, and it starts much better hot. Is there a way to verify what the timing actually is?

but it seams youre having a couple issues with timing

Thanks! I got the Olds figured out. I didn't understand how the timing affected starting so much. It starts beautifully now. Being that the ring on the balancer slipped on both, I was just hoping for a way to determine the timing otherwise. The truck is starting better hot and cold, but it's probably still not right.
