Ignition switch?

All,
This is the first time I'm posting here so bear with me please.
I recently picked up a 79 swb stepside & been going thru a mess of wires. The previous owner had rigged a push button start switch that bypassed the neutral safety switch which was a concern for me being I didn't want my truck to end up somewhere it wasn't supposed to be.
The problem I'm having is there is no power going to the starter or NSS, also when I put my test light to the purple wire on the starter, it's actually grounded. Is this right or is my starter bad also? I'm thinking that the ignition switch is bad since there's nothing going to the NSS? When the push button was hooked up the starter sound kinda weak but wasn't sure if it was the type (looks like a mini starter) or because of how it was hooked up (from starter to button to fusebox).

It's probably not grounded, it probably just has continuity. Does the ignition lock cylinder properly actuate, did you check the ignition switch? Reconnect everything correctly and trouble-shoot from there.

The ignition switch was bad, so I changed that out. Now I have power to the NSS but am hesitating to hook it up to the starter only because I'm not sure if the starter/solenoid is bad. Has anyone ever tried to alligator clip the ignition post on the starter & see if it's actually neutral when it's off? I was thinking that you'd never know if it was actually grounded.

Ok so I picked up another starter, but before I swapped them out, I tested to see if the new starter had continuity from the body to ignition post. It did! So I hooked up My starter & it started right up! I was hesitant to hook up my starter in fear of frying the new ignition switch. I thought it was odd that the ignition post on the starter was actually grounded & that the ignition switch would send positive current though that wire. Anyway, thanks for your help, appreciated!👍

Again, not grounded so to speak, just continuity to ground. When energized the voltage is dropped across the load.
