454 bolt on performance
« on: December 05, 2016, 05:49:03 pm »
Hello. Got a 1986 chevy c30 dually 454 automatic. It is the air injection version carbureted before they came out with tbi. I want to do headers, valve covers, a polished intake manifold, a carb, and air cleaner. I do not want to replace my heads. Iv been told that the 86 egr stuff has different heads than the earlier engines. All the egr stuff is coming off. The truck is a daily driver that tows heavy loads frequently and uses 87 octane pump gas. I need someone to tell me what a good setup would be. Of course id love to have a tunnel ram setup, but i dont want it to be a strictly street truck because i do use it for work. Any ideas or previous builds that may point me in a good direction?

Tunnel ram and towing and daily driver don't go together.
This motor was built to peak torque numbers for pulling.  What kind of carb are you wanting to move from?  It should have a quadrajet on it.
Is it currently stock?

What are you hoping to get out of it?  A cam change that moves the power way up in rpms will hurt your low in pulling power.  Quadrajet should be perfectly fine for 90% of pulling scenarios

I want more towpower, a nice cam lope at idle, and a prettier underhood. Plus if i keep the quadrajet setup, i still want to replace it with new aftermarket stuff. Especially since i will be getting rid of most of the vacuum lines.

Cam lope and low end power don't go together.
