Hard Starts

You're thinking backwards. What you describe you want is a TBI system.

If you want it to come off of fast idle sooner try adjusting the choke.

I'm one step ahead. I adjusted choke this morning.  It was way off. Now it's perfect. Nice warm up and smooth low idle.

What and how does a TBI work?

BTW, are all the choke coils wound the same way? Which way are they wound? Had to dial mine to the right-clockwise. It was way left.

Stewart: i have a qjet. M4ME.
Cranking is very little, a few pumps in the winter, one pump in the summer.

Blazer, thats why i mentioned above which way the coils are wound? But i will probably bring my fast idle up just a teensie bit. I dont like a racy engine, i dont care how cold.

Oh, and 1967 kaiser: the hemmings article stated to drive off s l o w l y, is best how to warm up the engine. Keep the rpm's low. I dont get traffic behind me out in the countryside. Might have problems in the city.

The choke and high idle is just the way it is for carbs to overcome cold friction of the engine to get it started and keep it running until it comes up to temp.

If you lower your high idle and reduce your choke spring tension your not going to like the result.

Your right blazer, the result wasnt great. So i just brought the tension back a little and found a good happy medium. Engine is not racey or boggy---when warm or cold.  I asked VZ once, why such a low idle. He said if you can get away with it, why not. And i can get away with it.
