Noise In The Front Of Engine
« on: January 15, 2006, 05:33:00 am »
Ok, ive got a 81 Chevy K10 with a SB350, last week i noticed after going offroading, there was a noise under the hood, ive narrowed it down to being in the front of the motor, at first i thought it was the alternator, kinda like a light metal to metal spinning, so i took off all the belts thinking it could be the power steering pully or something, and with no belts the, the motor still made the noise, but faintly, you had to really be looking for it to hear it, so i put all the belts back on, and same thing...

When i first start the truck in to cold, it seems to be louder, not real loud but enough to where you know something is up under the hood, while driving i dont hear it but i got a loud exhaust so, but it seems when the motor is all warmed up it goes away...

Any Thoughts?  Ive worked with alot of cars and trucks and from my point of view its not a noise that seems like if u drive it you'll break something...       Its like a light metal to metal spining noise or like a bad vacum leak,

Are you sure your motor mounts are in good shape.  If a motor mount broke, it could drag your balancer on something.  Does the bearings in your water pump feel tight?  Take your hands on your fan and try to move up/down checking pump bearings.

Is your oil pan in good shape?  Could you have knocked the pan against the crank or something?

How about the fuel pump?  Is the push rod in the fuel pump ok?  That can make noises.

YOu sure it is in the front of the engine.  I also would guess the flexplate may be hitting the dust cover or trans or starter if you hit that and bent it  offroading.

Make sure your fan clears everything and not hitting a shroud or radiator.  How about the transmission lines....clear?

Ok all those are good try's but the noise basicaly goes away when i take all the belts off, ( not spinning the water pump, power steering, or alternator) i mean with all the belts off, u can still hear it, but really quietly, when i put them back on it gets louder...
