1987 fuel pickup fitting sizes??
« on: July 14, 2006, 11:19:00 AM »
I am trying to find out exactly what are the sizes of  both o-ring fittings ,where the fuel line and the return line connect to the actual fuel pickup. It is for a 1987 fuel pickup assembly. The fittings on the pickup are threaded male o-ring style.

I am in the process of putting a 93 LT1 into an 86 model s/w chevy. All the fuel line is braided AN -6 and i need to order two fittings to tie the braided line into a modified 1987 TBI pickup (it has a high pressure late model internal pump).

I have no idea what size fittings i need to order! I cannot find these specs anywhere online, and it is causing a major snag in my progress!! I can take reference pictures if needed!!

They are 14mm and 16mm.  You need the 14mm to AN adapters.  You will only find them in certain places.  I am swapping to a LS Motor and found the ones I needed at http://www.performanceplumbing.com/ of which I can personally recommend.

Street and Performance also has them.

Pure choice Performance is where i got the lt-1 fuel rail adapter lines... the ones with the snap in adapters with an-6 24" hoses. EXCELLENT web site for fuel issues!!!

I got ahold of S&P Performance, and they have a "Fitting Specialist". He said the steel lines are 5/16" and 3/8", and they have adapters for 38.00 each!!
After doing a little more research, i found what i needed at Summitracing.com. These are steel line compression fittings (with a ferrul), with a AN -6 male on the other end.... $8.88 each!!

For anyone ever interested in doing a fuel injection install... im finally figuring this pain in the @ss out!!!

As I stated before I have already figured this out well before I posted this.  Pure Choice has the fittings also, as I posted.  The fittings are 14mm and 16mm (they aren't standard size), the line size is 5/16 and 3/8" though.

This is the actual piece from their site:

They were $17 for a set of 2 when I got them.

Roundedline,
I looked on their website,  but the problem was that i didnt know exactly what fittings i was looking for. I decided to go this route basicly due to the fact i was certain it would work (with no surprises). I have found out how much little things have to be figured out with fueled injected engine swaps. But it is almost ready to fire..... almost!!!

I gotcha.  I just called and talked to Gary there and told him what I needed and he sent me the right stuff.  Post us and update on it when you can.

UPDATE:
Finally got all the fuel lines and the filter installed, put on factory manifolds (for test purposes only), got all the wiring tied up, soldered and shrink insulated.
Tried to turn over and.... nothing. No fuel delivery. I fought it most of the day, finally deciding that it won the battle! So heres what i have:
The fuel pump relay.. good. Can here it cycling with the key. Traced the wiring (Painless wiring harness).... only one wire goes to the pump. Pulled the pump/pickup assembly out of the tank, and i get power all the way to the wire clip on top of the pump. Replaced the new pump with a new pump again. Same problem. Ran a length of wire for a ground to bypass the ground wire already present.
WTH am i missing here. I read the entire manual front to back, and cannot figure this out... any ideas.. suggestions, etc.??

After a nights rest, i cleared my head, thought about this logicly.
Its obviously getting voltage, my test light is coming on. So I checked my fuel pump lead with a voltometer this morning. getting 4 volts?? Pulled the assembly back out. The ground wire is braised to the return line, and the actual wire comes off the top of the pickup to complete the circuit.
When i modified this pickup assembly (an 87 model pickup assembly in an 86 tank), i had to cut 1 inch off of the return line and feed line; the whole assembly was 1 in taller than the 86 pickup was. I used high pressure RUBBER hose to tied the lines back together.
In a nutshell, the rubber hose on the return line wasnt let the ground make any contact! Fixed it up, completed the circuit, and turned over the engine for 7 seconds... fired right up!!
