clicking front hub?
« on: August 05, 2005, 12:08:00 am »
I have a bit of a problem with the left front of my 86 k-10.  It is making a tick or clicking sound similar to a hub clicking but I have replaced the hubs and it is still doing it.  It is more pronounced when turning, forward or in reverse.  The hubs where and are warn steel hubs and the old ones appeared to be in excelent shape but I replaced them any way.  I have never heard a bearing make this sound but is it possible.  I replaced them in 99 and only have about 30,000 miles on them.  The pickup has 260,000 miles on it but I replaced everything in the whole front end in 99.  Any body have any suggestions?  Thank you.

Does it do it in both 4wd and 2wd?  Only when wheels turned full lock or straight on?

I think it sounds like a bearing if it does it all the time regardless.  I replaced the bearings once on my Camaro, and left the castle nut too loose, for fear of overtorqing the bearings.   Lets just say I was taking it all apart again a few months later and replacing bearings again because I left it TOO loose!  Lesson learned!

It must have been the bearings.  I replaced them last weekend and no more click.  The bearings looked fine but they had some wear.  Thanks for your help.

How loud is the clicking.  Can you here it with the windows up?  What speed does it sound better or worse?  How tight of turn or straight line?  If you can give me alittle more info maybe I can help.

It does it at any speed under about 40, and does it while turning just slightly to full turn in either direction but mostly to the left.  I'm tempted to change hubs again since it sound identical to a clicking hub.  Thank you!
