Hello From New Guy - Where to start?

Hi all. I am new to the forum and wanted some suggestions on where to start. I have decided to restore my 84 Silverado that I bought in 1989 when I was 16. I had the truck for sale, but just couldn't sell it. Finding this forum helped me decide to bring it back to life.

It will need a new motor and transmission. I’m going to take my time with this project and learn as I go. The truck is in pretty good condition to begin with so even someone with  my limited skills should be able to pull it off. I am wondering if I should remove everything and repaint the frame. Also, what kind of paint should be used on the frame if I do this?  Does it have to be powder coat? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the site cc84. Lots of great resto info here. Did you check out the Body posts? If Your frame is good, you may want to consider por15 for a coating. No sandblasting needed.
Base coat/ clear coat is the preferred method of paint application. Roundedline sells parts on this site too. Experts will be along  with the real advice.

Taking it down to the frame is definately the way to go.

As Don said POR15 is the way to go. It can be brushed or sprayed on.

As preveously stated POR 15 is a great product. If you have some heavy scale you can knock it off and sand blast those areas and still use POR 15. Around here it about $30 plus per quart but 2 quarts would probably do a frame. With a frame you don't have to top coat POR, it is not activated so it is not UV protected. I would top coat it with acrylic enamel. I don't see the need for base coat clear coat on a frame. POR has to be top coated within a few hours of application though or use POR self etching primer over it.

Thanks to all. I had not heard about POR 15. I also had not found the other threads when I posted this originally and will try and post in the proper place next time. I was surprised at how quickly everyone responded. It's great to see so many people willing to help others and share knowledge.
