Weird VIN Number
« on: December 30, 2006, 07:24:00 pm »
Well ive had this chevy short bed for sometime now, and well shes in great need of restoring so im selling my Trans Am and waiting a year or so before i buy my next toy (Corvette). So in the mean time im gonna do some stuff with my old Pickup. Well looking at the VIN decoder i noticed my VIN dosent fit in anywhere. Ive always thought it was an 80. anyways whats everyone else think? My VIN's CCD144AS139276. (The A confuses me) Now It sasy there its a I6, but when i bought the truck 5 years ago it had a V8 (350) with a 3 speed Man and NO power brakes. Also had AC, now i thought ALL of these Trucks had power brakes and i would of thought that if it didnt have power brakes why would it have AC and PS?

Thanks for any help

Allot of the 6 cylinder trucks did not have power brakes. Someone most likely swaped the V8 in. The power stearing could have been original or swaped in with the V8. As for AC it is most likely original as the fire wall is a bit different from a non AC truck, not to say it can't be swaped in but its not comon.

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

It appears you have too many numbers, check your VIN to see if it reads CCD14AS139276.  The "A" says it's a 1980.    catalog has a VIN decoding page.

C - Chevrolet
C - Conventional Cab
D - 250 6 cyl.
1- 10 series (1/2 Ton)
4 - Pickup
4 - 1974
A - Lakewood
S -
139276 - Sequence number...

It appears as noted above that you have too many numbers.  The 6th digit signifies the year, not the 7th.  The seventh digit signifies the build plant...

The motor has definitely been swapped out based on the VIN.  Power brakes were typically not used with an I6.  AC was an option on any truck.

We have a VIN decoder listed on the website for both series:  73-87chevytrucks.com/VIN.htm
