Tell me what you think of this motor
« on: April 27, 2007, 02:34:54 pm »
Found this for sale locally. Guy dropped the price to $1000

'68-'69 REBUILT 327, cast # 3932386, used in corvette, camaro & other hypo apps, c/w 202 heads #3973487, 4 bbl intake hei etc, carb, runs great $1200.

My 85 SWB 2WD needs more power. It has a very mildly built 0.060-over 350 in it. I bought it off the 2nd owner after the truck was restored/rebuilt so I only have info from the appraisal book and my own findings. This is what I know: roller rockers (unknown ratio), unknown heads (probably stock smoggers), unknown compression ratio (doesn't ping ever on regular gas and advanced timing), Edelbrock 650 4bbl carb, Dart Sportsman II dual-plane intake, unknown cam (I think it's a 260 duration Blazer-brand cam; quite mild), full-length headers, HEI ignition, TH350 with shift kit and unknown stall converter (presumably stock or close to), and what I believe to be 3.08 gears and 295/50-15 rear tires. I estimate horsepower in the low 200's.

Any thoughts on what kind of power that motor might make with my carb and headers on it? Would it be worth it in my truck? I want some more fun around-town power when I take out my truck on nice days.
85 Chevy Silverado C10 short, wide, yellow, 2wd. Lowered, 60-over 350 with Dart Iron Eagle heads and Comp Cams XE268 cam, TH350 w/ shift kit, 3.40 Gov-lok 12 bolt.

Take that $1000 bucks and get a decent set of heads and a new cam and you'll smoke that lil 327

These guys are right...there is no substitution for cubic inches...a good set of heads and a better cam will be a much better investment.

turn that 350 into a 383 Stroker Stump Puller by grabbing a 400 ci crank and a set of rods from Summit that are already shaved for the 350/383 stroker modification. I love mine.

Thanks for the replies guys. I would love to have a 383 but time and funds I don't think allow to either have my motor stripped and rebuilt or to buy a new one outright. I did find some 1.94 and 2.02 heads on Ebay, fully rebuilt by engine shops in the 400-500 range for a pair, complete. Not bad?

One thing I'm concerned with is my engine runs quite smooth and quiet right now. No valvetrain noise or anything like that. I'm worried if I have somebody tear the top end apart for a cam and heads, I might not get as good as I started with for smoothness and reliability.
