I wouldn't be concerned about it. His for instance there was probably a poor engine break in. I've seen many experienced engine builders make foolish mistakes when first time firing an engine. Way too many guys forget to fill the engine block with coolant and just fill the radiator. Some assume just turning the oil pump shaft is good enough to pre lube the engine etc...

GM EOS (Engine oil supliment) has been around forever - it's great for prepping engine bearings and camshaft bearing journals however I always coat the lifter feet and camshaft lobes with Molybdenum disulfide grease (moly lube)

Once you properly break in the engine - dump the oil, change the filter and use a quality oil. I find no documentation of their being any notable problems with the current API oil ratings - Why hasn't this guy contacted SAE or the API and asked them for answers instead of making a big deal out of it first?

I have seen that before and have read other stuff on the subject, I have a stock of older Mobil one that I will use up and when that is gone I will use diesel engine rated oil. The oil companies are taking stuff out of oil that they think the newer car don't need, seeing that most if not all new car are using roller cams, The flat tappet guys need to watch what they use.
