Replacing power window motor 87 shortbed
« on: October 26, 2007, 02:14:25 pm »
OK guys it's happened to me......

My drivers side power window motor has crapped out.  I have the new motor and tested it to make sure that everything else was fine before I proceeded with this install....   I have not been able to find out enough information about the whole uninstall and reinstall procedure....  and unfortunately it does not look like there is much room to work with....

Now I think I kind of have the idea but the whole chopping off of the fingers scares me...  I am definately mechanically able to do this.... but I just need some help guiding me in the right direction for those who have done this already....

In addition when does the possible finger issue come into play... while everything is still on the door... or once you get everything out and then detach the motor from the regulator??

I really would like to work on this over the weekend... so any info would be very helpful..

Thanks
Mike

Yes i read that exact post before i wrote mine...  I guess what I am asking is......  When will I have the issue with the regulator and my fingers...  While I am trying to get the whole assembly out of the truck... or once it's on my work bench and I try to remove the motor from the regulator??

In addition I assume it ALL comes out the top where the window is  :)    how does the window come off of the track??

You know this is one of the most vague topics in the haynes/chilton manual......   :(    hahaha

Update:

Well it was a success.....  I finally have a drivers side window that I can actually use.....    Oh and now my truck has a little "corvette" in her....  My father in law gave me the  window motor from his 86 corvette that he sold but  it's an exact fit..... and the window goes up nice and fast too  :)

It was a struggle at some points but I got it all figured out.....    A few words of advice for newbies... as I was on this project:

1)  When you finally get everything out please make sure you drill a hole through the regulator and bracket so when you remove the motor the preloaded spring won't move...  I did this and beleive me I can see how it could have been an issue.
2)  Also on the way back in... place the motor/regulator assembly in the door but do not bolt it up.... at this point you need to wiggle the window itself back in and line it up in the tracks and then bolt the regulator back to the door....    I tried to first bolt up the regulator to the door and then wiggle the window in......  but after an hour there was no way I could get the everything in....  BUT after i unbolted the regulator from the door I was able to finesse everything in   :)
3)  Once everything is in crack open your favorite beverage of choice and enjoy  :)

Thanks for all the help here that I read BEFORE i tried this.......  now onto the passengers side..... It's a slow up and down so I figured I would replace it before it goes....

Thanks
Mike

Sorry, I wasn't sure what you were asking, but the finger threat is when you pull the motor off, the regulator is under tension as you found by drilling the hole.  You can also clamp it to a vise on one side to keep the regulator stationary.

Glad you got it fixed!
