The cargo light is a common item. My '83 was the first 73-87 I'd seen without one.

well, it was an OPTION from 73-up...but i don't think it's "common".  out of the 11 C/Ks i've had...i've only had ONE with one.  and it was my '87 K10.  i guess it would depend on the area the truck was sold in...as to if it was a popular option around that area...

Yeah, i don't care if it is there or not...I think a  brake light would look better.

Atleast 99% of em have those cargo lights around here. I don't like em, but up until I got mine without, I thought ALL of them had em from the factory. I actually figured mine was a shortbed camper package, since it has a sliding back glass and no cargo light..figured it was an optional delete. I think a third brake light would be a vastly superior use for it..especially since the light output was horrible anyway. My '84 had a cargo light, and the mounting bolts were damaged, so I covered the hole and bolted a chunk of angle iron to it and mounted a spotlight facing the rear, wired into the same switch. It was a handy deterrent for the jerk that followed me for 15 miles with his high beams, roof rack spotlights, and really bright driving lights on..After 15 miles I finally remembered that light..
