choke adjustment, vacuum leak (something may have gotten disconnected), timing--distributor loose?, if you have a cat converter, perhaps it is clogged, EGR clogged?....just a few things to throw out there.

1st off what do you have? What carb do you have? What engine do you have? What ignition system do you have? What's your timing set at? etc...list details.

It sounds like your float is sticking.

late model 350 with sepintine belt, 700r4 trans.
performer intake
holley 670dp street avenger, electric choke removed
roller rockers
nice lil cam
long tube headers
flowmasters
stock hei,plugs,wires,coil
timing was set by ear, theres no timing tab. BUT it was set when the carb was messing up so its not to perfect.

im thinking it all has to do with the carb...

#1 nail down your timing... find TDC #1 and make a timing pointer or put one on and refernce that with the balancer or make your own mark.

make sure your advance is working correctly. If you are running a stock HEI go through it. This is probably the most over looked thing ever. Install a decent advance curve kit and not sure how big your lil cam is but try running the vacuum advance to full vacuum. That should help with a more stable idle and better throttle response.

It sounds like the float is sticking in your carb. After you straighten out your timing if it does it again take a screwdriver handle and tap on the side of the carb, if it straightens out take the carb off and rebuild it. Replace the needle and seat.

The GM HEI is a great distributor when compared to breaker points but that's about it. If you bought an MSD or the like you would be simply amazed at the difference. I kid you not. It should be a mandatory upgrade for anyone looking to get better performance. I'd do that before many of the other mods people tend to do first.

I've always used MSD and had good luck can't speak for the less expensive units but good luck!

might wanna try adjusting your float. i have had the same problem with my old truck, not sure the quadrajet is anything similar to what you have, but my float was too high on my quad and was open just a little bit and is was running doggy, kinda sounds like what your problem is. other than that all i could think of it being is your vacuum advance not being hooked up properly..... then again it could be you have some loose debris in the bowl of the carb and it is causing blockage.
