Pull out the distributor. Pay attention to where the dot is on the drive gear. It should face the same direction as the rotor points. Drive the roll pin out of the drive gear and remove it along w the washer. Remove the pole piece. The p/u coil is retained by a metal clip. Now is a good time to clean the grooves on the pole piece and pack the grooves with a thin coat of white grease before reassembly.

There is a roll pin in the gear, you need to press it out.

Stevens I hope I'm not misunderstanding- are you asking how to get the gear off the shaft, which the guys have already answered, or how to remove the entire distrib. shaft from the engine? If that's what you're having trouble with, you can squirt penetrating oil around the drive gear to help loosen it up so you can pull it out of the engine. And then if you need to, you can use an oil filter wrench or a strap wrench around the distrib. to turn it and help the oil loosen it up. The shaft pulls straight up out of the engine.
