This engine is stupid, or maybe I am......???
« on: February 10, 2008, 07:58:23 pm »
okay started taking apart my olds 350, the distributor is stuck, usually you pull up and wiggle it back and forth to get it out right? well, I got nothing no movement in the dist. at all, if you wiggle the camshaft the rotor part of the dist will move back and forth as well? What am I doing wrong, or maybe the dist. just needs some convincing that it is time to come out.....

How old is the motor? Maybe it has oil caked up around the housing. Sounds like it needs a little persuasion.

Yeah, I already beat it to death with a mallet, even bent the vaccuum advance. It still won't come out? Is there something I can put on it, or need to take off of it....I've never had this much trouble with one of these before.....I just want it to come out. Don't care how just want it out!!!

You took out the hold down clamp right?  ;D Soak it with some penetrating oil. Rotate the housing back and fourth. It may take some working but you'll get it out.

If you don't care about the distributor use a clamshell porta power. It will come out.

You might be able to loosen it by using a 14" pipe wrench in the outside of the housing and rust blaster or carburetor cleaner on the shaft. .turn the wrench back and forth to try an loosen the shaft. You might have to take the oil pan off to check the oil pump too, after beating with the hammer.

the hold down clamp??

Just kidding, it's off, anyway, I've used some PB blaster onit, and a 14" cresent wrench on it and it still wont budge...I've taken out two of these before and never had it be this hard...I just want the block, the rest will be new including oil pump, so I'm not to worried about that, But until I get this off I can't get the engine acid dipped, or the magnafluxing thing to check for cracks...

I had a Ford 400M back when I was a kid that did that to me once. I eneded up snapping the housing off. It went to the bone yard with it still in it.

Well turn the engine upside down and soak it with pb from the inside. Then take a brass punch and give it a few love taps while you give it the chubby checker

okay I'll have to give that a try, so soak it with pb blaster and then use a brass punch to tap on it as I try to wiggle it out...seems like it might work.

This may be a little crazy, but, could you take the oil pump off, keep the pin going up into the distributor in place, and take a mallet and tap the pump pin upwards?

How about putting a torch five or six inches away from where the distr. meets the intake to heat it up around the base? Then work it back and forth.

it's an olds block, dist. doesn't go through the intake, it goes through the back of the block. I'm gonna try some of these ideas this weekend and see if I can get it out.
