Flux Core Welder
« on: February 15, 2008, 12:02:42 pm »
I borrowed a Campbell Hausfeld wire feed arc welder form a friend.

Can I use this welder to do minor body work on my '76 GMC, like fill holes on the side where the body molding was, tack or spot pieces on?

Just trying to get started.

Sure. It won't weld as nice as a MIG but it'll do the trick. Just practice on different pieces of scrap and sheetmetal 1st.

And always use proper UV protection especially a welding helmet.

Thanks! I got a welding mask.

Question: For a hole, a little smaller, than a dime do I need to cut a circular piece to fit or just try to weld over it?
I borrowed a 4'' Dewalt grinder, but bougth a 6" wirebrush dics, can I take the guard off and use the 6" wirebrush dics?

Will a square palm sander, with 80 girt paper work just as well, as a orbital sander?

Since This is ur first time i would say just make a patch...And use a magnet to hold it...Tack it at the top then the bottom then left to right and then Chris cross it...And Just take ur time with it..When ur all done grind it down smooth...But take ur time with this let the grinder do it for u and dont over heat it....And i use a orbital palm sander all the time...But if its the vibrating one then no it wont work the same..I cant say if u can use a 6 inch wire brush in a 4 inch grinder with the guard off cause i wouldn't want to be the cause of ur loss of fingers or eye sight...Them things get wicked...And fling every thing up and with the bigger brush it might take some skin of the old fingers if ur not carfull

Sacred to death!
I'm taking that 6 inch brush back now!
I like my skin, fingers (although ugly), and eyes too much! I'll post before and after pictures of my work!

For a small hole like that I would weld a washer inside the hole then grind it down. As far as using the grinder without the gaurd, that's fine but just wear HEAVY leather gloves incase you slip and hit the wheel. Also wear some decent safety glasses

Only use the 4" brush wheel on the 4" grinder and leave the guard ON. It sounds like you figured that out already.

Yea invest in a good set of Welders gloves and a face shield....Or like vile said a GOOD set of glasses....My father used to work with a guy that lost his eye cause of a angle grinder wheel failing apart with out a guard on it...And a washer is ur best best....It does work good...Saves u alot of time cutting...As long as u got a backer on it u can use ur welder to fill it...But u dont want to close up big holes with weld...

Dont know if Im too late to put in my 2 cents but Ill do it anyways.Tack your patch leaving the wire tacked to it.Clip it off a few inches above the patch and you have a "Handle".Use a flapper wheel on your angle grinder because it wont build up alot of heat and its a little faster cutting. It will also leave a smoother grind when your done.
