Why are Suburbans sacrificed more than any other Chevy?

When it comes to restoring or repairing a 73-87 Chevy (full-size) truck or (full-size) Blazer the Suburban seems to be the donor vehicle of choice. Why? Doesn’t anyone restore old Suburbans anymore? If you ask me, I think the late ‘80s early ‘90s Chevrolet Suburbans are some of the coolest Chevy’s around. After I finish restoring my ’87 Chevy V/10 truck, I plan on acquiring at least a ’90 or ’91 Suburban and plan on restoring it as well. The older Suburbans have been argued over by top automotive enthusiast, to be one of the most highly prized Chevy’s when they become a full-fledged classic.

I agree, they are some great vehicles.  Of course I am biased.

Because most of the parts that were upgraded will work on a pickup where a Blazer won't.  And they were carried over until 1991.

I myself dismantled a perfectly good 89 sub for a newer drivetrain and front clip for my 74 Blazer. Usually you can pic up a sub for a lot less money than the same era blazer. I got my 89 for $1,500.00 and have everything needed to make my 74 updated to 89 fuel injection and newer front sheetmetal.
If I tried to buy all this stuff in pieces I would have spent way more than $1,500.00. A lot of people don't like them because they are too big and somewhat of a pain to manuver.

Thanks for all the info guys, very helpful. I understand that in some situations you have to do what you have to do, and that’s ok. Like topless blazer mentioned, it was cheaper for him to buy a Suburban and use its parts to fix his Blazer, than to spend money on individual parts alone. That is completely understandable, though it still seems sad that a valuable asset like the Suburban from GM would be used that way. It seems like we are unwittingly killing off a valuable piece of General Motor’s history.

I bought an 89 Suburban 4X4 for $200 bucks with a TBI 350 and have robbed so many parts off that thing. I ended up selling a ton of the parts and making lots of $ too

When we moved from Ohio to Tenn in 1989, it was in a 79 Burb pullin a 27 foot Coachman in the rain for 575miles. Man that 454 did a great job and was comfy too. I shoulda kept it.Who would know I would join a bunch of rounded line frea... I mean nice gentlemen... some 17 years later?
