Horn Button wiring problem
« on: August 03, 2008, 10:04:24 pm »
Haven't been here in quite a while.   My truck is pretty much finished.  This site is the only one that has consistently solved my problems.  Thanks to everyone who has helped me with my truck project.    When I purchased my 78 Chevy 1/2 ton step side truck the horn did not work.  I never got around to fixing it.  Now that I have tried to fix it, I find I have no idea how to set up the contact kit and the wiring.  After removing the steering wheel, I found the contact set up was missing.  I ordered the contact set, however, there were no directions as to how to hook it up.  The kit consisted of a metal cylinder with a flat end, a spring that goes over the cylinder, and a plastic cap.  I figured out where these parts go from the picture in the ? catalog,  but I do not know how the wire from the horn striker hooks up to the contact kit.  Also, I think the cylinder needs to be trimmed to the proper length since it appears it is a universal kit made for many applications.  Are there instructions anywhere that can direct me in the trimming of the cylinder and hooking up the wire to the contact point?  Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

A diagram would be a good thing. Pictures are always a good thing.   Thank you very much.   wideboots@att.net  is the e mail address.  Thanks again.  More information about the kit that needs no trimming would be appreciated also in case the diagram is not enough.

I checked out the parts available at the web site you suggested.  I have all these parts.   On my truck there is a wire that runs from the contact ring down into the column.  I need to know where this wire is connected.  I think it connects to the cylindrical part that has a spring around it, but I don't know how the contact is made.  Hope this makes sense. Thanks.

Your horn button snaps into the ring that the wire connects to. The spring under the horn button prevents contact. When you depress the horn button it completes the path to ground through the metal to metal contact. This path ground the horn relay and it goes beep.

Yes thank you.  Now where does the other end of the wire connect? Mine is connected to the ring.  I just don't know where the other end goes to complete the circuit.

There is a plunger that is loaded like a pen spring. It has a tang on it that you depress and turn into the hole through the wheel or hub depending on what you are using. the other endo of the wire goes to the contact plate.

Thanks to your help and diagrams, I figured out the problem.  I now have a horn that goes beep, beep.   ;D Another success story.  Appreciate your help.
