My 78 K-20 has a carrier bearing
« on: September 18, 2008, 12:14:03 AM »
Thats kind of odd to me.  I crawled under my 78 K-20 today to measure my exhaust pipe for some shadetree repair work and noticed that my rear driveshaft is a two piece unit with a carrier bearing. I have seen this on one ton trucks quite often but never before on a 3/4 ton.  I'm not upset or looking to remove it, just surprised.  I figured it was just cause its a 4 speed with a short 205 case.  However, my other K-20 had a one piece shaft as have the three that my friends have.  Mine also has the factory dual crossmember setup, a factory tach, and a skidplate.  I guess it was worth trading my dead 98 k1500 for.  This one at least starts and drives.

My '75 c10 has a two piece, I think it is quite common, more common infact for the lwb trucks regardless of 1/2, 3/4 or 1 ton.

2 piece setup is very common on LWB and even more common on HD setups.

I figured it was related to all of th HD stuff on the truck.  My old 76 c-10 had a two piece, but there again, it was a two wheel drive.  This one was just not a normal thing in my area as it is a 4x4.  Not that it matters to me, the way its going to be used the heavier it is built the better.

Here is the first pic.  It is from Sunday when my friend and I pulled the old rotten front clip off of her.  Was too dark when we were done to get any more.  I'll get some updated ones Saturday or so when I'm back out there working on it.
