Removal of gas pedal

It looks like there's a "cap" on the end of the gas pedal rod...  Do I just pull on it real hard, or do I turn on it, or is there a clip holding that cap on?  So far, pulling it hasn't worked...

It should be sloted like on a bicycle brake line.

I'm not sure what it is you are trying to remove...The cable from the pedal? If so, the plastic bushing just pulls out & the pedal arm is slotted on the top for the cable to slide through (Capt.'s "like a bicycle cable"). Or the cable from the firewall? If so, go under the dash & squeeze the Two tabs on the part that sticks through & push it out. If it is something else your trying to do, just try to explain a little differently exactly what it is your wanting to accomplish. We're glad to help!  Lorne

I'm trying to remove the actual gas pedal to replace it with a new one.

The problem is that I can't really get behind it to see how it's hooked up.  I couldn't find any pictures of it online.  I undid the spring and pulled the pedal out as far as I could and tried to look back there to see how it was connected, but there wasn't enough room....

What I could see was a "cap" that holds the pedal and pedal spring on.  I'm not sure how that cap is held on.  Is the actual rod slotted or is the cap slotted?  Does that mean the cap just pops off while turning it?  Or does that mean there's a clip holding the cap itself on?

Sorry -- I haven't worked on a bicycle for 30 years.  lol

The cap should have three screws holding it in place. Remove the cap, and the pedal rod will come out. The slot for the cable is at the top of the pedal rod. The pedal does not have to come out to replace the cable. These things are very easy to remove. If your having trouble, then your looking at the wrong thing.

Thanks for the replies everyone.  I'm thinking that maybe I'm not doing a good job of describing what I'm trying to do...

I want to remove the gas pedal that you push with your foot to make the car accelerate.  I want to remove it so that I can put a new one on.  I can't see behind it to see what hooks it on.

I'm having trouble following you, would like to help. There are Three 3/8" or 10mm bolts in a Triangle form above the part you put your foot on, you get the pedal & arm off together. If your trying to remove the "axle" of the plastic pedal from the arm... I believe that is some sort of a peened over pin that really isn't intended to be removed. Hope this helps, Lorne

I knew it was that funny little push cap you were fighting with.   

Those caps are typically a one-time use type thing, and they always seem to break when taken off.  The "cap" is simply held onto the shaft by the tension from the little tangs in the center.  If you're careful you might be able to get it to slide off the end by prying it away with a small screwdriver or needlenose pliers etc..  A combo of using both seems to work best for me.  Just watch out that it doesn't go flying away into the nether-regions of the floorboard when it finally comes free!

If your new pedal comes with that "cap" don't worry about destroying it. I've tried to save these in the past with little success. When I discovered there cost I was mad at myself for tying to save them. If you are going to tackle this I recommend removing the gas pedal to do it, if you haven't already. It may make it a little easier to replace. Just my opinion though.

The pedal kit I ordered from   didn't have a new cap.  (Go figure, %50 of their stuff never is complete!)

Chris, can you find replacement caps of varied sizes at parts stores?  I bet they're in the "help" section huh?  Ahh.. I am never gonna fight with saving one again either if that's the case!

You should be able to find that nut locally.  It "might" be in the parts store HELP, but a bolt place should find it.

Awesome guys, thanks for all your replies/help!  I'll pry it off and see what happens.  The new pedal didn't have the cap, so I'll just cross my fingers!  Someone has got to have one or something that'll work in it's place!
