del, the thing in the exhaust doesnt move at all so its either stuck open or closed.

Hopefully it is stuck open or it would run like crap.   My valve still works on my '79.  After the motor runs about 3 minutes with the hood open,  I watch the the rod pull the valve open.

When I was a teenager and my dad's 76 wouldn't run right, I threw everything I knew at it, new distributor, coil, plugs, carb, etc.  It just wouldn't make sense to me that it didn't run right.  Finally, as mentioned earlier, we found the valve froze shut.

i got a choke system for a holley off ebay for 7.99, the shaft on the cam (for the butterfly) is slightly bent (holley part# 45-457), so i ordered a new one from summit, along with a cable. i still got the rest of the parts for installing the choke for 8 bucks, so im not real depressed.

i popped the lever off that vacuum device in the exhaust and gave the butterfly a few technical taps and got it freed up, and in the open position. locked it in place with some loctite, truck runs much smoother.

my oil pan gasket is pretty much trash now, so im gonna have to see about getting that done at the shop. not having a garage to work in sucks. oh and my alternator's going out. lol.

ok, got the choke installed, left in open position as i need to go buy a drill (thats my excuse to go buy one heheh) so i can run the cable into the cab.

as ive never owned a carbeureted vehicle that had a choke, am i correct in assuming that the truck shouldnt start with the choke completely closed?

i moved it to the position where its open a bit and it started right up, it seemed pretty pissed off, but it didnt die right away like it usually does, so its an improvement. i let it run a bit and moved the choke to the completely open position and it died, im hoping because it wasnt warmed up yet.

i kind of guessed on how to install it looking at pics on google images, when i move the choke from open to closed should the throttle open and close slightly as well?

it might be binding up on whatever that is thats underneath the open/close mechanism and not supposed to be... dunno never had a car with a choke.
