1996 chevy help
« on: November 09, 2008, 03:39:57 pm »
I hope someone hear can help me out. My winter truck is a 1996 Chevy 1500, Ive been driving the truck recently and every once and a while i will be driving and it just looses power, motor stays running lights and everything stay on but the rpm drop to idle and i end up coasting for a while until it picks back up. My thoughts are a weak fuel pump but i want to make sure before i start replacing parts. The truck seems to do this while I'm cruising at a constant speed, hasn't done it while accelerating just cruising. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Being a 96 it must be throwing a code? Get the code and go from there. I am pretty sure if it was the fuel pump it would not run at all. Sounds like a throttle problem maybe?

There hasnt been any check engine lights comming on and the truck seems to run good once the power returns, i figured if the pump was bad then it wouldnt run either, im not to sure what it could be tho

Well i just bought the truck, but the fuel filter was the first thing i did. I didn't touch any of the ignition components because it runs good. The truck sat for around 6 months before i purchased it so i tried running an injector cleaner threw it along with some premium gas.

I would still have someone with a scan tool check it. The check engine light might have failed or been disabled!

Well i never found anyone with a scan tool that could help me out so i decided to replace the fuel pump anyways. I replaced the pump on November 11 and its hasn't acted up since, although it could have been bad gas I'm glad i changed the pump and happy to have it reliable again. Thanks for the help.
